War of the Worts XIII is an American Homebrewer's Association sanctioned competition and provides you an opportunity to have your homemade beer, cider, and mead evaluated by BJCP registered judges. Prizes and awards will be given for beers placing first, second, and third in each category, and for Best of Show. The 2004 revision of the BJCP guidelines will be used for this event. The competition will be held on Saturday, February 23rd at the Iron Hill Brewery, in North Wales PA (directions are located below). Judges should be there at 9:00AM, and, winners will be announced at 4:30pm.

Competition Guidelines and Entry Requirements:
  • War of the Worts XIII (beer/cider/mead)is open to all home brewers
  • All beers or meads must be noncommercial in nature and produced at home.
  • The entry fee is $6 for the first entry, and $5 for each subsequent entry accompanying the first. Checks can be made payable to Keystone Homebrew Supply.
  • Submit two 10-16 ounce bottles for each entry.
  • Bottles may be brown or green glass, and must be free of any labels, raised glass designs, etched logos, or other identifying marks.
  • A completed entry form must accompany each entry, recipes are optional. If entering more than one beer, make sure the correct entry form accompanies each entry.
  • A bottle ID form must be attached to each bottle with a rubber band.
  • Categories and subcategories may be combined for judging purposes, however beers or meads will be judged according to the category/subcategory in which they are entered. The style guidelines for each category and subcategory are included in this packet.
  • It is the responsibility of the brewer to decide which is the appropriate category for their entry.
  • Entries which do not meet these entry requirements will be disqualified.
  • Any disputes that arise during the competition will be settled by the competition organizers.
  • All Judges and Stewards are requested to arrive by 9:00 AM. Results will be announced at 4:30 PM.
  • Brewer feedback is the primary purpose of War of the Worts XIII. Your score sheets will be returned to you shortly after the contest. Please do not send an SASE with your entry.
Entry Deadlines:

Entries will be accepted from 02/05/2008 through 02/16/2008. Late entries will only be accepted at the discretion of the registrar.

Keystone Cup

The War of the Worts is the first leg of the Keystone Cup club competition. Homebrew clubs accumulate points at the War of the Worts and the Malt Madness (September) when club members' beers win. The club with the most points at the end of both competitions takes home the Keystone Cup. Complete rules can be found at www.keystonehomebrew.com

Directions from the PA Turnpike
  1. Exit from the turnpike at Exit #339 (old exit 26), Fort Washington. Take Route 309 Expressway North (it is the first available right turn after the toll booth). Be careful! it merges with the expressway traffic.
  2. Follow the expressway to the Norristown Road/Spring House exit. It will be the third exit while proceeding north.
  3. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp onto Norristown Rd. (There is a traffic light at the end of the ramp).
  4. Go through two more traffic lights. You will pass the Rohm & Haas complex on the right at the second light.
  5. At the third light make a hard right onto Bethlehem Pike. There will be a Texaco gas station on your right and the Spring House Tavern on your left.
  6. Proceed about 1/4 mile, the Iron Hill Brewery is in the shopping center to your right, at the far left end.
Directions from the Allentown-Bethlehem Area
  1. Take Route 309 south through Quakertown
  2. Stay on Route 309 through "5 Points" and past the Montgomery Mall on your right.
  3. Cross Rt 63 (Welsh Road) stay to LEFT on Old Bethlehem Pike. About two miles south of the Montgomery Mall the Shoppes at English Village will be on your left, but you must take the jug-handle to the right, into the Montgomery Crossing Shopping Center to cross Bethlehem Pike. Iron Hill Brewery is at the far left end of the shopping center.
